This genre of game requires players to place defensive structures to stop waves of enemies that follow a path to attack your castle or base. They typically emphasize strategic placement of “towers” (that shoot projectiles), resource management, and upgrading the towers for better defense.

Although Wikipedia’s page about the Tower Defense game genre claims a wide variety of influences dating as far back as 1980’s arcade games, the real popularity of this genre came about in the form of Flash games around 2007 or 2008.
