Dino Run is one of the top 10 Flash game classics in my opinion. It became an instant viral hit on the web when it released in 2008.
The graphics at first seem too simple, using a very muted pixel style, but the game-play really stands out. The game controls are quite smooth and there are visual effects like particle systems (something not “built-into” Flash). Collecting eggs and chomping up little dinos is punctuated with satisfying 8-bit sound effects.
Other than technical graphical feats, PixelJam did a fantastic job of creating a sense of impending doom with proximity based rising sounds effects and changing backdrops depending on how close the lava and rock tsunami is to catching up and nipping at your poor little dino’s heels.
Truly a masterpiece of small game design and creation, the game spawned a sequel, Dino Run 2 and Dino Run Marathon of Doom as well as versions for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and Android tablets.
