Spore Cubes 2014This is an updated and more polished version of the classic Flash game Spore Cubes that was originally launched in the year 2000 and went viral.
The game was quite popular and soon spread to multiple websites and was the impetus for creating of the web games portal LilGames.com which launched in June 2001. However, this was 25 years ago and internet/web access was not as simple and pervasive as it is now. Many people kept asking for a version of the game they could load up on their computers locally so they didn’t have to tie up their phone lines with a computer connection! And so as of November 1, 2001, SPORE Productions, under the Lil’Games brand, manufactured and sold physical copies of the Spore Cubes game on miniature CD-ROM discs!
In 2013, the game was polished up with improved sound effects, better graphics, a higher frame rate and ported to the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPads as Spore Cubes Free, and Spore Cubes for Android devices too, still using Flash but packaged up with something called Adobe Air. Subsequently, this updated web version of the game was released in 2014 to help promote the mobile app version that also saw its release to Google’s Play Store in both a paid and free version.
Ten years later, in late 2024 Flash is definitely dead as far as the app market is concerned and so the Spore Cubes mobile apps were again re-programmed to keep up with the times and remain compatible with more current smartphones and tablets. This time the technology used was the popular Unity game engine.
You gotta admit that a 25 year lifetime for a simple little puzzle game is quite the feat!
